Aside from being a generic pattern, the Deer Hair Emerger is known around the world and today we examine how Allan Liddle ties this fly. This particular version includes some CDC that serves as a shuck that adds a little extra imitation quality.
The slim body combined with the Deer Hair head means that when the shuck and head are ginked up this emerger pattern will sit well in the water. Paired with a well-degreased leader it is visible above the water so you can easily see it and is very attractive in a Trout’s eye view from below. They are a go-to in any water with rising fish especially when the Midge Pupae are emerging, resisting the surface layer as they transition from nymph to full grown adults.
Allan will be featured on our Fly Tyers Row at Open Weekend and he’d love it if you stopped by. Ask him about the latest patterns he’s tied or for tips and tricks to help improve your own fly tying skills! He will be tying a range of flies all weekend, so come and watch a master at his craft!
All the materials needed to tie this fly are available from Glasgow Angling Center as listed below, but as always, if you need any help finding materials or replacements, we are happy to help.
Alan will be on our Fly Tyers Row representing Fly Fishing & Fly Tying Magazine September 27-29th 2024.
