What is the Treat List?
Pet food and treat manufacturers tell pet owners many things, making many claims on their labels and websites. Some will say their products are like human food, some will claim organic or humanely raised meats. All of this is great for your pet, IF that company is honest.
One of the problems facing pet food/treat consumers is that regulatory authorities rarely (if ever) verify those claims. FDA and State pet food authorities allow manufacturers to make marketing claims without verification, regulation also allows manufacturers to use hazardous waste ingredients without disclosing to pet owners.
The FDA Center for Veterinary Medicine states: “we do not believe that the use of diseased animals or animals that have died other than for slaughter to make animal feed raises a safety concern and we intend to continue to exercise discretion in enforcement.”
In other words, pet food and treat manufacturers can use very low quality ingredients while telling pet owners that they use ‘only the best ingredients’.
The Treat List takes a different approach. We tell pet owners information about a company that we have personally verified.
We start with a long list of questions about the quality of ingredients, manufacturing, testing, and packaging. We then ask each company to provide evidence of their claims.
All treatment manufacturers included in the List use human grade quality ingredients, the companies have provided us with hundreds of documents proving that each ingredient is food grade.
If the company claims organic ingredients or humanely raised meat, verification documents are also required.
I ONLY feed my own pets food and treats made with human grade/human edible ingredients. The 2024/25 Treat List is my (Susan Thixton) ‘list’ of treats that I trust to give to my own pets.
Where are the treats available?
This ‘List’ is primarily for US/North American pet owners. Almost all brands are available in the US. Nine brands are available in Canada. Only a small number of brands are available outside of North America.
Most brands sell directly to consumers from their website. Some brands sell through independent pet food stores.
Types of treats on the 2024/25 Treat List.
There is a wide variety of treats included in the Treat List. Treats include cookie type, single ingredient dehydrated, and cheese treats.
Some of the manufacturers are small, some are very small. Some own their own manufacturing facility, some operate their pet treat business out of their home. All are dedicated to making high-quality foods using only human ingredients for the pets they serve.
The Treat List includes some of the pet food manufacturers included in the 2024 List (Food). There are four new companies that are not included in the 2023 Treat List or the 2024 (Food) List.
How are brands selected for consideration?
Some of the treats I was already familiar with, bought their treats to give to my own pets. Some were referred by friends, some were discovered from an Internet search, and one was referred by another treat maker.
No company pays a fee to be considered or included on the List. No company gives us free products or gifts, we buy the treats just like you do.
Why are some brands not included?
I am a very picky pet food/treat consumer. I ONLY feed my own pets (5 cats, 2 dogs) human grade ingredient food and treats. I can’t count how many times I’ve stopped people from giving treats to my dogs. They’re just trying to be nice, but…I won’t let my pets eat feed grade treats (or food).
Some brands may be excluded because I am not familiar with them, others may be excluded because I am familiar with them but I do not agree with their customer service methods, or they are members of a trade association that works against pet owners. I will not/will not disclose specific information as to why any brand is excluded.
How much does the 2024/25 Treat List cost?
The cost of purchasing a Treat List is variable, depending on the support you are willing/able to provide. Prices vary from $5.00 to $50.00. No matter what price you buy, the Treat List is the same.
Why charge for Listing?
TruthaboutPetFood.com and our sister website AssociationforTruthinPetFood.com (and myself) actively advocate for the rights of pet owners and we are 100% consumer supported. Listings, Petsumer Reports, and membership in our consumer association are our only sources of income. We accept no money from pet food and no advertising. Simply put, we charge for the List to support the pet food advocacy work we do.
