We review another installment of OnTheHookFishing, this time featuring Mr. Henry Gilbey of Savage Gear! He’s here to explain that fishing for Bass in the UK doesn’t have to break the bank and provides valuable information on what Rod, Reel and tackle you’ll need to start your new hobby!
There are many different types of lure rods in different brands, so to keep it simple, Henry recommends any rod 8ft5 to 9ft5 with a casting weight of 10-30g. The reason for this is because of the lures you will be using, as many will not exceed 35g and it is also critical that you can also make smaller lures.
Keeping it simple with the reel, Henry recommends a fixed spool reel, find something that compliments the rod you have, ideally look for ratings between 2500 and 3500. In Henry’s own words “If a good you feel like you’re going to feel good when you’re fishing.” These small reels still let you cast your heavier lures, but also allow you to manage all the smaller lures you’ll be using in the shallows!
Today, lures are a bit of an obsession with some anglers, especially with the wide variety available, but you don’t need that many to target Bass. Henry has two lure boxes and that’s all he takes because he knows the lures in those boxes all work for him. He recommends having a few long-casting Topwater lures, a few shallow runs of hard lures, a handful of soft plastics for a variety of different rigs, a few deep-sinking siwimbait and some metal lures.
Now that you have an idea for the kit, keep watching the video below to get some insight into the kit you need to wear, some luggage options as well as some insight into how Henry fishes with braid, how he brings out his lures and weather forecast and knowledge of sea conditions that will help you catch Bass!
