Today we examine the art of Light Rock Fishing (LRF)! To help us understand what LRF is all about, OnTheHookFishing featuring John Locker (TheFishLocker) decided to attend The Big LERF fundraiser, along with organizer Ben Bassett!
John hasn’t done LRF much so Ben takes him through where LRF comes from, what kind of kit you need to start fishing this way and gives tips and techniques for getting multiple species hooked! Over the past 10 years, LRF has evolved and become a very popular form of fishing lure on our shores.
When it comes to fishing, we often check the general conditions before we go on a trip, whether it will be sunny or rainy. The only thing you really need to read, is the tide times! It is best to arrive at your destination an hour before high tide. Another great benefit to LRF is that you can just show up at a harbor and cast your line into the sheltered bay and pick up a variety of species, sometimes even larger specimens!
When it comes to technique, there are different ways to make your lure or bait more attractive. In terms of attracting fish to strike, Ben uses a technique where he holds his rod like a large pencil and slowly dips and lifts the rod tip to create small movements on the attraction! Other methods include standard jigging, grab and pause and more! This provides a great challenge to LRF takers and eventually, you will develop your own technique that, when explaining to other anglers, just works!
