Do you have a cat sink? Someone shows up at your bathroom sink when you least expect it? While lying on a hard surface may seem less comfortable to you, many cats find the sink to be one of the best napping surfaces in the house. And there are reasons for this.
Sinks are perfectly sized for cat beds
Most sinks are the size of cat beds! And they are a similar shape too, with a rounded space to bend. So of course your cats see it as a built in sleeping spot.
Keeps them cool in hot weather
You may notice that cats are more likely to spend time in the sink when it’s warm. That’s because ceramic or porcelain surfaces stay cooler than other surfaces. An alternative to the sink is the bathtub, which is another place you can find your cat in the summer sun.
And while the surface may seem uncomfortable to a human, it is different for the cat. Humans don’t have feathers and they’re not very flexible (at least most of them aren’t). Cats have a cushion of fur, and their bodies are almost fluid in their flexibility. So sinks are the perfect space to contain them.
It is a raised surface
Cats, for the most part, prefer being up high. And while sinks aren’t the highest place in the house, they’re higher than their often beds. And if that’s the case in your house, you might want to consider finding some elevated places to put your cat’s beds.
That’s private
Cats value their privacy. And bathrooms are one of the most private places in the house. There is less traffic, and this is a way for them to have some peace and quiet.
Since sinks have all these things going for them, not least a cat’s eye, it makes you wonder why no one has invented a sink shaped cat bed? Guess what, there really is!
Of course, not all cats are sink cats. You can count me among those who hate the sink. (As if it wasn’t obvious from my expression as I posed for the photo for this post.) And I have good reason. Sinks are where I shower!
And while I tolerate bathing, I can’t say I enjoy it.
