CHARLOTTE, NC — Your pet wearing an ID tag and being microchipped could be the difference between being reunited with them or not, should they go missing, according to CMPD Animal Care and Control.
They say they want to keep pets out of their shelters and owners’ homes on the Fourth of July, often the hardest holiday for animals.
CMPD Animal Control is hosting its third annual Prep Your Pet event on Saturday, June 29, from 8 am to 10:45 am at 8315 Byrum Drive in Charlotte.
They will offer free exams, vaccines, ID tags and microchips. Adoption fees will be accepted at the center between 11 am and 5 pm after the event.
One in three pets will go missing at some point in their lives, and 90% won’t return home without ID, according to the Michelson Found Animals Foundation.
Communications Manager Melissa Knicely said the event helps keep more dogs out of their shelter and hopes more pet owners will do the same.
“This is the one day of the year when more pets in the United States are lost because of fear of fireworks show activities — the fireworks themselves, or just bands, music,” Knicely said.
If your pet is afraid of fireworks and storms, Knicely suggests allowing them to find comfort in a safe indoor space like a closet.
