Nancy Hodges is Volunteer of the Month
Submitted by The Animal Protection Society – Friday Harbor
The Animal Protection Society – Friday Harbor is pleased to announce Nancy Hodges as the Volunteer of the Month for March 2024. Nancy, or “Nan” as most of us call her, has been volunteering at the Pet Food Pantry since October 2023. From since then, she has been a valuable and welcome addition to our crew of caring individuals helping pets in need.
The Pet Food Pantry is an APS-FH operated community pet food bank that operates weekly out of our Treasure Hounds building in the heart of town. It was founded to help keep pets in their homes by providing cat and dog food and other basic pet supplies for families in need of temporary assistance. APS-FH also works with local human service organizations to get pet food and supplies to people who can’t get to the pantry. Nan helps distribute food and pet supplies every other week and does so with compassion and kindness for others from a non-judgmental perspective. In fact, one of her favorite reasons she volunteers at the shelter in this capacity is so she can live up to her belief that everyone should feel the joy and love of owning a pet regardless of their income status, which directly related to the Pet Food Pantry’s mission of supporting and valuing the human-animal bond we share with our pets.
Nan’s co-volunteers described her as a natural for this type of work. He puts people at ease with his understanding and humility. Nan isn’t afraid to jump in where needed and is quick to help organize, organize, and wrap food to prepare for the pantry, even stepping in on her unscheduled days when it’s needed. She inspects all food distributed and prides herself on quality control – nothing goes out the door that Nan wouldn’t feel comfortable feeding her own pet.
