Today we look at the Original MOP Fly, tied by Steve Cullen. This fly is quite controversial and it fishes very well after the flood. Because of its unique appearance, many anglers think there is no way this pattern will work, but it does and Steve assures us of that as well.
Part of the controversy surrounding this fly is the fact that it is often banned from competition venues. due to its unnatural size, color and sinking speed, any fish that sees this fly has never seen anything like it before and therefore hits it. In fact it is so good at what it does that it has not only been banned from competitions in the UK but many competitions in the US too!
Controversy aside, this is a cracking fly to use in stillwaters and reservoirs, it seems to be very good at picking up Grayling, but Steve mentions that he hasn’t tried it, but he assures us that the Trout will happily take the fly this, again and again.
All the materials needed to tie this fly are available from Glasgow Angling Center as listed below, but as always, if you need any help finding materials or replacements, we’d be happy to help.
