On April 24, the Uvalde County 4-H Dog Obedience Group donated 167.5 pounds of food, including cat food and about 10 bags of dog food, to the Briscoe Animal Resource Center.
4-H members also helped bathe previously abandoned and stray dogs and took them for walks, much to the delight of both groups.
4-H group senior leader Hope Smith and junior leader Kendall Moerbe lead the group as part of the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Office.
Those in attendance included Eragon Pilkington, Roxie Reading, Bonnie Brunk, Kiera Vanderlick, Briggs Davenport and Reagan Moerbe.
Heather Smith, 4-H parent volunteer, said there is a community service and career exploration component to every 4-H project.
“For the dog following project, visiting and volunteering at BARC is always a great opportunity for kids to engage with dogs and learn more about what goes into the animal adoption process,” said Smith.
Volunteers needed
The Briscoe Animal Resource Center, which works in partnership with city animal control, is always looking for volunteers for dog walking and other tasks to care for animals found wandering around the city.
BARC program director Cielo Castro said dog walking sessions vary between 30 minutes without water bowls and 45 minutes to an hour with water bowls, usually through of nearby Uvalde Memorial Park.
Volunteers, who must be at least 16 or have adult supervision if younger, typically undergo background checks and are asked to commit to about two hours per week.
BARC is in the process of building a new headquarters on North Camp Street, where they hope to expand educational efforts. They are currently located at 127 S. Camp St., across from HEB.
BARC office hours are 10 am to 3 pm on weekdays. Those interested in adopting or volunteering can call 830-591-9229 or email [email protected].
